Ahhhhh summer! Do you have all your veggies planted yet? June – the month when early spring flowers give way to the longer-flowering summer selection of plants. It’s also a good time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour before you get busy with hiking, camping, water sports, and the like. While the PHS stands down their monthly member meetings and speakers until September, your executive is still hard at work planning for the upcoming months.

Miyawaki Planting
This Japanese reforestation technique was applied at Algonquin College and a multitude of trees and soil remain. Kristi Beatty is exploring options to plant the excess trees and will engage CFB/ASU Petawawa to determine if there are areas that can benefit from this technique.
“The Miyawaki method mimics the way a forest would recolonize itself if humans stepped away. Only native species that would occur naturally in that area without humans, given the specific climate condition, are planted.” https://www.sugiproject.com/blog/the-miyawaki-method-for-creating-forests
Pembroke Horticultural Society 100-Year Anniversary
Imagine! 100 YEARS! The Pembroke HS has been serving their community for that long and has watched the city grow immensely. They have also seen a lot of old-growth trees removed for development. So they are celebrating their 100th year by buying and planting 100 trees to help reforest their urban environment. The Petawawa Horticultural Society will be donating $100 to buy one of these trees for them. Congrats Pembroke HS!
