July 2024 Newsletter

It’s getting to primetime vacationing season and the gardens are in full swing with a myriad of colours and textures. Fruits and vegetables are putting out their best with all the heat and rain we are getting. I am writing to you as I head to Guelph for the annual Ontario Horticultural Association’s (OHAs) Convention and Annual General Meeting (AGM) where many interesting speakers, events, tours and vendors are preparing to make this an eventful weekend. If you have the time next year, consider joining us!

Trillium Awards

Another year and we have some new gardens to consider for the illustrious Trillium Awards! Read more about this awards program and be sure to get your submissions in before the end of July 15th. The team has already been out to visit some beautiful front gardens right here in Petawawa and maybe yours should be considered too. If you think so, or if you have seen one that stands out in the community, be sure to submit it for consideration. We will be visiting prospective gardens during the third week of July. We will also leave you a notice to inform you that your garden/front yard is being considered so you can fine tune things before we arrive. GOOD LUCK!

Volunteer Activities

Lynn and Jim Ward volunteered to upkeep the garden at the legion and have done a wonderful job. Thanks much neighbours!

Jack & Irene van Gemeren and Lois O’Brien are busy eradicating Japanese beetles at the Community Gardens as they work to keep up with their own gardens and make sure that non-maintained gardens are covered. Thanks folks, for your work here!

Upcoming Events

  • Calendar Photo Contest (now thru August 31)
From now through August 31, 2024, we will be accepting photo submissions from members for inclusion in our 2025 calendar. They will be judged by the executive in September and the winners announced shortly thereafter. The winners will have their photo posted in one of the 12 months as it corresponds to the season and have bragging rights, so be sure to capture for the entire year. We anticipate that the calendar will be available at the AGM in November.
  • Trillium Awards (deadline for submissions is July 15)
Have you seen any beautiful yards that should be award winning yards? Please nominate friends, neighbors or even yourself if you think they/you may be deserving of recognition and submit your nominations. Deadline for trillium awards nominations for 2024 is July 15th. Visit the Trillium Awards Program page for details or simply submit your nomination through this form.
  • Member BBQ and Trillium Awards (August 18)
Mark this date and join us for the annual barbecue and trillium awards. 5PM at the beautiful and scenic 80 Point Henry Trail. We would love to see you there.
